Whoever does not love his friend with passion—whose attachment lasts only as long as it is compatible with his own convenience—cowardly retreats from his friend as soon as danger threatens the latter. Whoever does not hold to his honor with a certain passion first endures with false equanimity many diminishments of his good name and sinks in this way gradually into a dullness, so that it is completely indifferent to him what others think of him, whether they praise or blame him. Therefore, everything
