The complaint is as old as it is universal: that the realm of superstition is of immeasurable scope; that superstition, in its infinite ramifications, encompasses everything from the highest religious ideas down to the common conditions of actual life; that even clear insight and the conviction of its nullity cannot always and in all situations of life protect against its influence; and finally, that when fought and trampled, it always regenerates itself like a Lernean hydra. Thus, in periods of barbarism just as in those of higher cultural development, it has always exercised its omnipotence over human minds, and, as is to be feared, will always continue to do so.
Indeed, all of this is true, and confirmed by countless facts from ancient and modern times.
But let no one marvel at this phenomenon, which is certainly humiliating and sad for our pride.
