and was not to be found there. I therefore took the nearest route to Augsburg, where I happened to encounter my good friend at the home of Mr. N. N. He was highly delighted by my arrival and recounted to me at length the reasons for his escape, which numbered over 50. I was not only highly astonished by this but also terribly shocked. He also handed over to me the greatest secrets of the Jesuits, which he had in hand and had recently put to paper in the Latin language. And because his circumstances did not allow him to remain there for long, he begged me with weeping eyes that I should not conceal them (since a great deal depends upon this for all of Christendom), but rather help to promote them to print at the earliest opportunity. I promised and pledged to him to do so.
