befell the Knights Templar, who, although they were good pontificii adherents of the Pope and Papists, nonetheless let ambition and greed ride them until, finally, by the consent of several Christian princes and potentates, and indeed by the decree of the Pope himself, they were almost all at once, without exception, utterly destroyed and rooted out.
But the Jesuits wish to have their weapons and armaments, out of special consideration, much rather with them in their temples and churches than elsewhere. For they say: should a riot break out among the Papists, or should they be raided, robbed, and plundered in an emergency by foreign peoples, they would have their shield and protection in their own hands and could thus, in time, overcome their enemies themselves. But if that is not making a den of murderers out of a house of prayer, then I do not know what else a den of murderers might be. Yet, what I wish to say and report is to be counted and held as gold compared to what will follow next.
