PRELIMINARY DISSERTATION.

§. I.

In every dissertation in which a "Conjunct Theme," as it is wont to be called by the Dialecticians, is examined, one cannot understand more accurately what the Question or Proposition intends unless the words by which the thing that is the subject of the question is signified are evidently clear. And so, to me, about to investigate the bond between Soul and Body, I consider the same law to be written and the same task given at the beginning: that I should evolve all the words of the question distinctly according to their nominal definition, from which the real one then follows. Although you may say that from what has been seen fit to be prefaced, it is known enough what is being asked, I would reply: Not enough, nor in such a way that one or another doubt, or one or another occasion for hallucinating original: "hallucinandi", in the sense of making errors or wandering from the point does not remain here and there. This will appear clearly enough from the following points, with which I shall labor to cut the nerves of every error that could creep into the very treatment of the theme and disturb its circles.
