Since I saw that the COMMENTARY ON COSMAS AND DAMIAN original: "Cosma et Damiano Commentationem", which I recently dedicated to YOU on your birthday, was not ungrateful to YOU, FATHER-IN-LAW TO BE REVERED FOREVER WITH ALL PIETY, I make for myself the most certain hope that you will receive with a serene countenance this first Specimen of the Library of Rare Physico-Medical Books, which I offer to YOU with all cult of respect. This duty is demanded of me, and demanded by their own right by those new honors with which I see YOU adorned. For your greatest and outstanding merits, which exist in every literary matter, especially in medicine and natural science, have not only penetrated Germany
