...that is, in the very borders of the people of Gubbio, whence I could easily have traveled to Gubbio whenever there was need and could have obtained the necessary knowledge of the affairs of Gubbio; I had to finish it while absent and distracted by no small occupations. But if I have departed more than once from Ughelli and the remaining catalogs of the bishops of Gubbio that are in circulation, I would not want to offend anyone's mind in that. And I do not fear that I will incur the censure of prudent men and those who are true lovers of the truth; for it can be easily persuaded to them that nothing else was proposed to me in writing this work than the pursuit of truth, for the sake of attaining which I deemed it not a sin to depart from either Ughelli or any catalogs whatsoever, when I found them to be in the least disagreement with the truth itself. But I will explain my own opinion about this whole matter more conveniently in the final chapter of the dissertation on the City and Church of Gubbio, which I begin here, under God's guidance. Ferdinando Ughelli provided me with the model for writing it, to whom I approached as a reinforcement in composing the chronology of the bishops of Gubbio. For he, before he undertakes to record the individual bishops of each church in his register, culls not a few things concerning the history of that city and church in which they flourished. It is therefore my firm intention to follow this example of a most prudent man, and to preface some things about the city and church of Gubbio before I deal with the bishops. This will be the argument of this dissertation, a synopsis and, as it were, a view of which, exposed through the main chapters, you have here.
