The causes of faith are the Gospel, announcing remission on account of Christ: and the Holy Spirit, effective through the Gospel and impelling the will: and the will, assenting and not resisting the Holy Spirit.

What things are related? Related to contrition is the virtue which is called the Fear of God. Related to faith are Hope and Love.

What things are contrary? Profane security, or contempt of the judgment of God, and the simulation of pains, fight against contrition. Despair and the simulation of faith, which is profane security and contempt of the judgment of God, fight against faith.

What are the effects of true Repentance? A new and spiritual life, pious works. And because I call them effects, everything that certainly follows, I also count eternal life here.
