Romans 14
seek worldly fame and honor. For whatever does not come from faith, even if it were prayer, fasting, giving alms, or similar good works, is sin.
Jeremiah 5
For if works are to be and remain good, and are to please God, the person must first please GOD through faith. For the eyes of the Lord look for faith, Hebrews 11 and without faith it is impossible to please God.
Thirdly, we must do all good works in such a way that we seek thereby the honor of God and the edification and improvement of our neighbor, both of which the Lord Christ commands with one saying, Matthew 5, and says:
Matthew 5
Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and praise your Father in heaven.
For just as it is a great shame and dishonor to an earthly father when he has degenerate children who practice all manner of sin and shame, and conversely, it is a great honor when his children are well-bred, pious, disciplined, and honorable, so too is it a dishonor to God, our heavenly Father, and He is therefore blasphemed by His enemies, when we boast of being His children yet nonetheless pursue all public shame and vices. Therefore, so that God our Father may have no dishonor on our account, nor be blasphemed, we should be diligent in all Christian good works and guard and protect ourselves against sins.
