And this power, the Most Holy Trinity and Indivisible Unity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the one God who is the foundation of all things, expressed in the QUATERNARY Number (that is, in four relations: Paternity, Filiation, active Spiration, and passive Spiration), just as the begetter imprints his own character upon the begotten. For He himself, out of His infinite Goodness and immense Love, produced Fire, which the philosophers of the whole world declare to be the universal soul, from which all things receive life and being in their own proportion. The philosopher himself affirms that Fire is the first element in composition and the last in resolution, and that it, as it were, begets and nourishes all things. Pythagoras said that this Fire is the QUATERNARY river of eternal nature, or life, which diffuses itself through the entire universality of created things and maintains all things by itself, or through these same forms. But from where did the pagan philosopher derive this QUATERNARY river, if not from the sacred writings of the Christians, namely from the Prophet Daniel? I was watching, says Daniel, until thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days sat; his garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like clean wool; his throne was flames of fire, its wheels,
Daniel 7 burning fire, a river of fire, fast and rushing, going out from his face. This is that QUATERNARY river, not Pythagorean, but Prophetic, which the Prophet, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, recognizes to have descended from the Most Holy Trinity, from which every good gift and every perfect donation descends. And what else descends from the Trinity but the Image of the Trinity? Just as the producer imprints his own character, or image, upon the product. And what would follow the TERNARY more immediately than the QUATERNARY Number? And what is more similar and closer to the TERNARY than the QUATERNARY? Because in the QUATERNARY, the TERNARY is, and exists as the TERNARY. Just as the begotten exists in the begetter, and the begetter exists in the begotten; for everything that generates seeks to generate something like unto itself.
