just as a lion seeks to generate a lion, or a king a king. However, in the Most Holy Trinity, since perfection is supreme, the Image of the Trinity will be most perfect. And thus this fiery QUATERNARY river, being a likeness of the producing GOD, the supreme and most perfect fire, could be called the soul of the whole world, as witnessed also by Saint Augustine, who in his exposition of that passage, "The Spirit of the Lord was moving over the Waters," recognizes this Spirit to be the fire by which the whole visible world is vivified, moved, and contained. And this is the true Seraphic flame, in which the Image of the Trinity first shines forth, that fiery ardor of Love by which GOD, inflaming Himself, created all things, first illuminating the QUATERNARY Number, and leaving in it the image of His own ardor. Although the power of GOD is infinite, He did not measure His creation by His own infinity, but by His power; in that He produced this fiery ardor, the QUATERNARY source of Divine Goodness and immense Love, and, as He first breathed the breath of life into Adam, He breathed it into all created things, so that Ezechiel rightly expresses the glory of GOD in this QUATERNARY image of Him: The appearance of His glory was like Fire. Therefore, since the TERNARY bears the type of the Trinity and explains the individual persons by its individual parts, GOD wished to accommodate His power to the QUATERNARY, in such a way that the TERNARY multiplied by the QUATERNARY completes the twelfth or QUATERNARY number. This twelfth number, composed of the QUATER-TERNARY or the TER-QUATERNARY, embraces the entire Idea of the whole World, and is the primary cause of the order of all things, binding all remaining things to GOD no differently than the first link in a chain holds all the others, and connects them to that from which it hangs. And it connects the first FOUR principles of things—fire, air, water, and earth—from which all composite bodies and the substances of natural things are constituted, to GOD, the creator of all things, and founds all these substances of the whole Universe in the FOURTH Number, and makes them depend upon the FOURTH Number and have their being from it.
