from Priam to this day. From whose Blood, which I think has happened to hardly any other race more gloriously, so many Emperors of the Romans have been designated before. For this one family has given thirteen August Caesars to the Christian World in a nearly continuous series, and with happy auspices, it will give the fourteenth, FERDINAND THE FOURTH, KING OF HUNGARY AND BOHEMIA, etc.
But let us briefly investigate a little further how much Mystery and Majesty lies hidden in words of FOUR letters. And first, concerning the City of Rome. It is written with FOUR letters: Roma, which is the Queen of Cities and the head of almost the whole World, the prototype of all Republics of old, now the storehouse of the Orthodox faith, and the norm of Sanctity. Bethlehem, which is expressed with twice FOUR letters, is the City famous for the Nativity of our Savior, from which King David arose and was anointed King, and in which the tomb of Jesse, the father of David, is shown. Hierosolyma Jerusalem consists of THREE TIMES FOUR letters, the most famous City of the whole Orient, in which and around which the same Savior of ours worked our salvation. The Province of Austria, which is not derived from the Latin Austro South wind, but is called by the German word of FOUR letters: Oost. For when the Franks had removed the Roman armies from Gaul, they designated the eastern boundary of the Kingdom thus: which is called Austria and Austrasia by writers everywhere. But after the King of the Franks, Charles, who had the surname "the Great" from his deeds, having promoted the Empire more widely, had routed the Huns from that part, he established the eastern border there, so that now it is called by the Germans with a word of twice FOUR letters: Ostreich, which sounds like "eastern kingdom." And truly a mystical prelude, or rather a presage, lies hidden in these words: that the government of the entire Roman Empire is to be established in this part of the World. For first this Province had Marquises, and later, augmented by many privileges of the Emperors, Dukes and Archdukes: now, the most flourishing and fruitful parent of Caesars, Kings, and Princes, it is deservedly called the Heart and Shield of the Roman Empire.
