And it is to be noted generally that there are:
1. Salt baths, for cold and humid intemperaments.
2. Nitrous baths, differing from the former in that they are not as astringent.
3. Aluminous baths, for various kinds of fluxes and tumors.
4. Sulphurous baths, which delight in a solvent and strengthening virtue through heating.
5. Bituminous baths, suitable for edematous tumors and dropsy.
6. Martial (iron-bearing) baths, which exert a styptic effect through drying.
7. Gypsum baths, drying and conglutinating.
8. Mixed baths, which consist of mixed qualities and act according to the proportion of whichever quality is dominant. Therefore, it will be easy to judge the faculties of our Germany and other provinces from those already mentioned. Wherefore, the mixtures of these, especially those which seem to excel the others, are to be explained according to the mind of Fuchs original: "FUCHSII", with powers and constituent principles patent to the judicious physician.
In the mountains of Lorraine, there are baths called plumbary, in French les eaux de Plombières: they consist of a mixture of lead, sulfur, and alum. In the Diocese of Chur, there are thermal springs called Piperinae, from a mixture of sulfur, iron, copper, and niter. Regarding these, it is to be noted that they do not flow continuously, but erupt on the third day of May and withdraw themselves again on the fourteenth of September.
Nor does the pleasant region of Bavaria lack healing fountains. For near Aabach there are hot springs impregnated with sulfur and niter, not far from the town of Wembdlinga in the same province; in the meadows, it gushes forth impregnated with the same principles as the former. Ægera, a Noric city, pours forth an acidulous fountain, the so-called Ægranas, to which are joined particles of the martial iron-rich family alongside fixed salt; it is famous for removing obstructions and correcting atony.
In Bohemia near Graupen flow the Teplice springs original: "Teplicenses", famous for sulfur, niter, bitumen, alum, and limestone. Near the town of Elnbogen in the same kingdom arise the Karlsbad springs original: "Carolinæ", which harbor in their bosom a most pure alkali salt, whose nature has been proven by chemical analysis original: "Enchyreşi chymica".
