From there also Apion, in JOSEPHUS, Book II against Apion, said the Sabbath was so named. For the Jews, when after finishing a journey of six days they reached Judea after their exit from Egypt, rested on the seventh day, because they suffered from ulcers of the groin, since σαββω or σαββατωσις denotes a disease among the Egyptians, which however JOSEPHUS gravely and deservedly criticizes loc. cit. The same thing, that they left Egypt, or were cast out, because of the vice of leprosy and vitiligo, and were brought into neighboring Syria, was cast as a reproach upon the Hebrews by MANETHO the Egyptian, LYSIMACHUS, and APION the Grammarian, which JOSEPHUS refutes at length in Against Apion, Book I. Certainly, nowhere does the sentence of JUVENAL, Satire II, fit the Jews better:
As they are all, according to the opinion of the Gentiles, infected with this abominable plague, so they themselves, on the contrary, have polluted the history of the Jewish race with many fictions, and by mendacious rumor have completely extinguished the truth.
No one, therefore, writes more honestly about the departure of the Jews from Egypt than STRABO THE GEOGRAPHER in Book XVI, whom HUETIUS on page 64 names a man of great value, who discussed Moses and the Jews with the highest candor. For he mentions that Moses, disgusted with the profane customs of the Egyptians, having gathered a huge multitude of pious men, withdrew into Judea, and having fixed his settlements there, and having instituted a rite for worshipping God, and having abjured the cult of idolatry, he established his empire not so much by force and arms as by piety.
