concerning which matter the celebrated WAGENSEIL has treated learnedly in Fiery Darts of Satan, p. 555, etc. BARTHOLIN, On Biblical Diseases, p. 463. The Jews themselves also assert that this law was enacted for the sake of health, so that their well-being might be consulted, as it suited the genius of the region and the nature of the soil which they inhabited, and to keep them healthy and safe, JOHANN VON LENT, l. c. p. 508. Wherefore the Jews, in BUXTORF, Rabbinical Lexicon, p. 735, say: עשרה קבים נגעים ירדו לעולם תשעה נטלו חזירים Ten cabs of leprosy descended into the world; nine of them the PIGS took. KIDDUSCHIN, folio 49, 2. RABBI BECHAI, in the Pentateuch, folio 132, column 3, writes: If an infant sucks swine's milk, he becomes leprous. The same was produced by MANETHO the Egyptian in AELIAN, On Animals, Book X, chap. 16: Ἀκούω δὲ καὶ Μανέθωνα τὸν Αἰγύπτιον σοφίας εἰς ἄκρον ἐληλακότα ἄνδρα εἰπεῖν, ὅτι γάλακτος ὑείου γευσάμενος ἀλφῶν ὑποπιμπλάται καὶ λέπρας I also hear Manetho the Egyptian, a man who attained the height of wisdom, saying that he who tastes swine’s milk will be filled with vitiligo and leprosy. Regarding measly pork, see COELIUS, Book XXV, 26, p. 1419. Therefore, leprosy and vitiligo belonged to the nature of the Jews, which they believed to be caused by the eating of pork, as is read in PLUTARCH, in Symposiacs, Book IV, question 5. It is no wonder, therefore, if hatred toward that animal grew daily, and they abhorred it from fear of leprosy, d) being infected with which, they were removed from the sight of all and from the city.
and 13. chap. 11. and 14. chap. 11. and
d) Severe edicts exist to that end in the sacred writings, and specifically in the Pentateuch, not only concerning the leprosy of men, but also of garments and houses, so much so that men could not be cautious and circumspect enough, since the divine law did not execrate any fault as much as leprosy. The dissertation of Abarbanel on the leprosy of garments and houses is annexed to the Book of the Kuzari, edited by BUXTORF, p. 400, etc. Compare also Laws in HOTTINGER, Hebrew Law, p. 244, 260.
