There were those who composed introductions to scripture of various kinds, historical, critical, dogmatic, and mnemonic. Since these shed light in every way when the oracles, consigned to letters by divine power, must be explained, I have likewise made a record of them, especially those in which the history of sacred books is contained and which deal with the author, time, occasion, argument, and other aspects of each divine writing.
