the first, 1518, with certain differing scriptures: the second 1521, by the work of the brothers, the sons of BARUCH ADELKIND, with an index of the Haphtoroth CLEMENT, Bibliothèque curieuse, historique et critique, Vol. IV, p. 29; KNOCH, Nachrichten von der braunschweigischen Bibelsammlung, Vol. I, p. 89-97; BAUMGARTEN, Nachrichten von merckwürdigen Büchern, Vol. II, p. 95.; the third 1528, by the care of CORNELIUS BEN BARUCH ADELKIND: Ibidem, p. 97. the fourth 1533, and the fifth 1544. Ibidem, Vol. IX, p. 191. All are sufficiently neat and correct; yet on account of the omitted signs of chapters and verses, they are not fit for easier use:
SEBASTIAN MÜNSTER, who published the Hebrew code, expressed in the character of the German Jews, at Basel, 1536, 4to, in two volumes. Ibidem, Vol. II, p. 98; KNOCH, Nachrichten von der braunschweigischen Bibelsammlung, Vol. I, p. 680. This edition does not commend itself by the elegance of the paper and letters; but it has joined to it an appendix useful for students of sacred criticism:
ROBERT ESTIENNE, who gave two editions of the Hebrew code at Paris. The other is divided into four tomes, indeed in such a way that its individual parts came forth separately from the year 1539, until they were collected into one body in 1544, 4to. Its estimation is not great. There are many faulty things in it, not only in vowel points and accents; but also in the letters: indeed sometimes in entire words. The other and later edition, exposed to public light from the year 1544 to the year 1546, 16mo, in seven volumes, is indeed superior to the former and shows greater accuracy; nevertheless, various things have been noted by learned men which are in need of amendment: CLEMENT, Bibliothèque curieuse, historique et critique, Vol. IV, p. 32-33; VOGT, Catalogus librorum rariorum, p. 90; BAUMGARTEN, Nachrichten von merckwürdigen Büchern, Vol. II, p. 210, 214; WIDEKIND, Verzeichnis von raren Büchern, p. 533; add: MAITTAIRE, Catalogus librorum, a Stephanis editorum, p. 19, and Annales Typographici, Vol. III, Part 1, p. 357.
