Peace allows wise men the free leisure to
meditate. It is the gift of Liberty that it is
permitted to profess one's opinions publicly.
The former brings it about that we gain
advancements in wisdom; the latter, that we
impart the fruit of it to others.
What is the reason for wisdom is also the
same for learning. The fury of war has cooled:
arms are silent; immediately the Man of Letters
withdraws into his Study: safe and tranquil, he
wanders through the monuments of antiquity and
the books of the ancients: he gives himself
entirely to his delights; neither the care for his
fatherland, nor the fear of imminent war, nor the
threats of enemies, nor the indignation of the
people moves him. He owes this to Peace. But also to others
