only delight were sought, this relaxation of the mind should still be sought after as more honest and liberal than others. For other things are not for all times, nor for all ages, nor for all places. But these studies nourish youth, delight old age, adorn prosperity, and offer a refuge and solace in adversity; they delight at home, they do not hinder abroad, they stay up with us at night, they travel, they rusticate; all of which things, even if we were unable to touch them ourselves or taste them with our own sense, we ought to value greatly even when we see them in others.
Therefore, I would wish those detractors who, under the pretext of piety, declare war on letters, to remember the saying of the wisest Chancellor of England: 1.) Fr. Baco Verulam. on the advancement of sciences, Book I. light tastes in philosophy perhaps move to atheism, but fuller draughts lead back to religion. For truth does not flee the light, but rather shines more in the light than in darkness, in which, clearly, all colors appear the same.
