The reasons why I must ask to be allowed a brief preface are not to increase the number of pages, but to make my readers familiar with the occasion and the plan of my work, and at the same time to fulfill my duty by giving a sign of my warmest, most heartfelt thanks to a few men.
In my study of the human body, I always found that the best means to research and become acquainted with the particular arrangement of its parts, their purpose, and their peculiar utility, was comparison with other animal bodies. I noticed that every part was arranged in accordance with the specific purpose of the animals, and that even those parts which, at first glance, seemed insignificant, had to be exactly as they were in terms of their purpose. This inspired in me a special love
