if I were to forget the person here who first encouraged me in comparative anatomy, namely my former teacher, Councilor Zimmermann original: "Hofrath Zimmermann" in Braunschweig, who has built himself immortal trophies through his writings. To this noble man, whose friendship I have the fortune to possess, I pay here my most vivid thanks, partly for his encouragement and partly for all the friendship shown to me, which I shall never, never forget.

This was what I found necessary to put forward as a preface, and I now present to the public the first volume of my work, admittedly, as already mentioned, not without fear, for who knows beforehand how the child will be received when it is sent abroad. However, the kindness with which my work has been received so far, and the fairness which I can rightly expect from my most honored readers, let me hope that the mother will not be offended by the reception of her child.
