A detailed hand-colored copperplate map of the continent of Asia, produced by the Homann heirs in Nuremberg. The map shows the landmass from Europe and Africa in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east, and from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Indian Ocean and the northern tip of Australia in the south. Geographical regions such as Siberia, Great Tartary, China, India, Persia, and Arabia are clearly delineated with colored borders. In the upper right corner, there are two large informational boxes. The first contains a message to the reader and a table of coordinates (longitude and latitude) for major Asian cities. The second provides a table of distances (milliaria) relative to degrees of latitude. In the lower-left area, between the labels for Arabia and India, a decorative title cartouche is featured. Next to it, in the bottom left corner, is a vignette depicting two figures in traditional Eastern costume (likely Turkish or Persian) standing amidst supplies near the coast, with a recumbent lion resting nearby.
We have represented these astronomical observations, from which the location of the principal places has been defined by longitude and latitude, in this map using a more accurate method. We wished to communicate these publicly, collected here from various itineraries of both the French and certain other learned men. In those places, however, where astronomical observations were lacking, we have corrected these maps based on the itineraries of many men and the descriptions of regions. Farewell!
