A highly detailed bird's-eye view engraving depicts the city of Franeker in 1598. The city stands within its defensive walls and water-filled moats, showing individual buildings with stepped gables and organized street grids. Central landmarks include the large St. Martin's Church and the town's market squares. At the top center, three ornate coats of arms are displayed: the lion of Frisia, the imperial double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire, and the city arms of Franeker featuring a bell supported by figures representing Justice and Prudence. At the bottom left, a decorative cartouche contains a numbered legend identifying 26 key sites. Labels outside the city walls indicate directions and waterways leading to neighboring towns like Harlingen, Leeuwarden, and Bolsward.
