The front cover of a manuscript is bound in red leather. It features four ornate brass corner pieces and a central brass boss/medallion. At the top, a rectangular brass frame holds a small parchment or paper label with handwritten text. The leather is decorated with blind-tooled vertical bands of repeating floral and vine motifs. Large characters are painted or stamped in white or silver pigment on the leather surface.
