[it] turns out, and therefore all great circles to be drawn in the projection will scarcely differ from straight lines.
§. 25. What has been said here regarding the great circles normal to the central meridian AB holds in like manner for all great circles that cross other meridians normally; whence also this notable advantage of this projection is obtained, that straight lines drawn from any given location to any other location correspond quite exactly to the great circles to be drawn on the spherical surface itself, and therefore the distances between any locations whatever in this projection can be determined with the aid of a compass without notable error; wherefore, on account of these excellent properties, this method of projection is deservedly to be preferred far above all others for a general map of the Russian Empire, even if, when examined with the utmost rigor, it departs not insignificantly from the truth.
