among the Greek historians, you will find nowhere that this is a proper name, neither in Thucydides, Herodotus, nor others; indeed, not even in the poets, Hesiod and Homer. Therefore, it is not an ancient proper name. Among more recent historians, it is indeed found, but in those who translated Latin histories into the Greek language, such as Appian, Dio, Plutarch, and the like; from which it is evidently clear that there is no probable reason why Paul's name can be said to be Greek, but that it is clearly a proper word of the Latin language.

Those who seek the origin from the Hebrews say less probable things, since the derivation of names must be sought from their own languages, and it has not yet been proven that the word is Hebrew, a fact which the divine Jerome usefully admonishes, although
