for whatever reason that may be, whether to declare the right of Roman citizenship, or because of his changed religion, which he wished to bring also to the Roman peoples, or because of the converted Sergius Paulus, or divinely, or humanly, or because of all these things, it cannot be easily stated: yet this is certain, that it was done with God thus ordaining it, which the outcome declared, since great dignity and grace were added to his ministry from that, so that we see, as of a Roman man, everywhere, not only his name, but his doctrine to be made plausible, and with this intention, undoubtedly, in all his Epistles, he preferred to adorn his doctrine with the name of Paul, rather than of Saul.
