among the youths performing the customs, it is permitted for these to join the perfect men, and to share in offices and honors; but those who do not pass through the youths, do not come to the perfect men. And those who again pass through the perfect men without reproach, these become the elders. Thus indeed are the elders established, having passed through all honorable things. And this is the constitution, by using which they think they would be the best.
And even now, testimonies still remain of their moderate diet and of the practice of training the body. For it is considered shameful among the Persians, even now, to spit, or to blow the nose, or to appear full of wind. It is also considered shameful for anyone to be seen going somewhere, either for the sake of urinating, or for any other such thing. They would not be able to do these things if they did not use a moderate diet, and by exercising, they consumed the moisture, so that it might pass away elsewhere.
These things, indeed, we are able to say about all the Persians. But we will now speak of that for which this account was begun, the deeds of Cyrus, beginning from when he was a boy. For Cyrus, until he was twelve years old, or a little more, was educated in this education, and he appeared to differ from all of his age, both in learning quickly what was necessary, and in performing each thing well and bravely.
