For indeed, it must not be denied that antipatheia natural antipathy/aversion as well as sympatheia natural sympathy/affinity intervene no less between various things, whether inanimate or animate, when considered according to their species. In the same way, regarding the human being alone, not indeed considered as a species, but according to individual persons, various things reveal themselves, exhibiting a judgment of singular, or more truly astounding, sympatheia affinity and antipatheia aversion, and at the same time idiosyncrasia individual temperament/peculiar constitution. Leaving aside many other things which could be noted here, we shall examine only those which present themselves by reason of food, and we shall briefly set forth from history how some have not so much abstained from daily foods, and those not even unhealthy ones, as they have rather been forced to abstain against their own will. To begin, allow me to have adduced here the general observation of Julius Alexandrinus in Book 2, On Health, chapter 13, writing thus: "Some refuse wine greatly, yet do not refuse vinegar; they gorge themselves on grapes most greedily; the same people can often drink Cretan and more generous and well-sweetened wines, but cannot drink those of a lower quality.
