Meanwhile, I would not deny that for some, the smell of cheese, which exhales more sharply and unpleasantly as it decays, can cause a significant aversion to it, especially because even things that are very fragrant and emit a pleasant odor are accustomed to cause some people almost to faint or lose consciousness. Above, in Thesis 3, we taught this by way of examples while discussing something else. For, just as according to Plautus Roman comic playwright, the palate of diners is different; so too is the sense of smell different. For the same odor is not pleasant to everyone, as Theophrastus Greek philosopher says in book 6 of On the Causes of Plants, chapter 5; and indeed, for some people, other things are more agreeable in terms of scent. Ambergris is pleasing to some, musk to others, civet to others, as are the rose, citrus, jasmine, and so forth.
