that thereby the faithful themselves, aided by their own devotions and prayers and the intercessions of the Virgin herself, and moved by our exhortations, may be rendered more apt for divine grace, and may be the more willingly encouraged to honor the aforementioned feast of the immaculate Virgin, as they will have perceived themselves filled more abundantly by this gift of heavenly grace, and relying upon the mercy of almighty God and the authority and merits of his blessed apostles Peter and Paul, as well as our patron, Saint Martin the Confessor, we mercifully relax in the Lord forty days of the enjoined penances to all those truly penitent and confessed who, on the aforesaid day, to the praise and honor of the same Virgin, in individual churches, monasteries, and other ecclesiastical places of our aforementioned cities and diocese, have been present at the divine services or have fasted annually on the vigil of the same feast.
