Finally, if you look diligently into Mary, you will find in her individual virtues that are singular, which seemed to be common. For what angelic purity would dare to work toward that virginity which was worthy to become the shrine of the Holy Spirit and the dwelling place of the Son of God? If we weigh things by their value, above all others is she who first proposed to lead an angelic life on earth, and to keep the purpose of virginity immovable, for she did not waver in the least when the angel promised her a son. For she disposed the ascents in her heart, with conversation, piety, and prayer. Finally, she ascends into the mountains with haste. Let us say piously: she ascends first into the temple, so that she might be presented there, and for the redemption of the human race, she might pray to her Father in the secret and hidden place of her heart. She was truly fervent in seeking grace, charity shone in her, virginity in her flesh, humility stood out in her service. Justly, therefore, that divine singer, in admiration of her, sang beforehand: Who is she that ascends, clearly surpassing men, even transcending the angels, indeed above...
