The fifth, concerning the nativity of Christ

O admirable exchange! The Creator of the human race, taking an animated body, deigned to be born from a virgin; and proceeding as man without seed, He bestowed upon us His deity. For in many ways and in many measures, divine wisdom consulted for the human race and mercifully bestowed many gifts of His providence upon all past ages. But in these last times, He exceeded all the superabundance of His accustomed goodness when, in Christ, mercy itself descended to sinners, truth itself to the wandering, and life itself to the dead. And that eternal Word, equal to the Begetter in the unity of His deity, assumed the nature of our humanity so that God, born of God, might also be man born of man. O nativity, inviolate in sanctity, honorable in the world, lovable to men, immeasurable in the magnitude of the benefit, and even to the angels, sacred in the depth of the mystery! And in all these things, [it is] admirable in the singularity of its novelty, as one that seemed to have neither a similar predecessor nor a successor, where the birth was without pain, alone, ignorant of shame, ignorant of corruption, not reserving but affecting the true temple of the virginal. Worthily, therefore, O faithful soul, you ought to exult and rejoice, because on this day, which is consecrated to the nativity of our Lord, the devil lost his right and the world received salvation.

The sixth, concerning the circumcision of Christ

O great sacrament of piety! The eternal Word, which God spoke once, does not repeat it. The immense Word, which the universe of heaven could not contain, concerning whom "in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God"—this Word, I say, God made abbreviated upon the earth when, clothing Himself in human flesh in the womb of the virgin, He reduced Himself to the measure of an infant. But He prohibits that this same Word should be considered abbreviated today, having received in the flesh the sign of circumcision. For if this Word was lessened in His conception little less than the angels by taking the form of a man, then in circumcision, which was decreed in the law against original sin, He is much more lessened by taking the form of a sinner from the angels. O your stupendous humility, Lord Jesus! You receive circumcision, decreed in the law, in the flesh, you who appeared in the flesh without any stain of pollution whatsoever.
