But what gifts? The Holy Spirit, such a gift as you yourself are. Your mercy is truly great, Lord Jesus. You give a gift equal to yourself, since on this day you poured out the Holy Spirit upon the sons of adoption. Therefore, the Scripture speaks in the plural, that you gave gifts to men, because with the Holy Spirit many gifts are infused. For the Holy Spirit descended upon the throne of your grace in the form of fire with a sudden sound, coming with the splendor of truth, with the ardor of charity, with the sweetness of spiritual joy, with the beauty of virtues, with the treasure of graces, and with the knowledge of all tongues. From this day on, the thunder of angelic preaching roared. From this day, showers of charisms and rivers of blessings irrigated all that was sterile and all that was difficult, because the Spirit of God was moving over the waters to renew the face of the earth, and the flashes of new light shone to dispel the old darkness. Today you have flooded the apostles with the fire of the Holy Spirit, as if with a fountain of living light, so that they might afterward illuminate the whole world like twelve rays of the sun and as many lamps of truth, and fill the members with new wine and irrigate the wounded hearts of all peoples. Prepare yourself, therefore, faithful soul, to receive such precious gifts of the Holy Spirit, for you will undoubtedly make yourself more capable of them in proportion to how much you have freed yourself from the love of earthly things.

The benefits of your generosity, sweet Jesus, shown to the Christian people in the most divine sacrament of the Eucharist, which confer upon them a remarkable dignity, show with clear light how worthily, conveniently, and justly it befits the devout faith of the believers to recall the institution of such a salutary sacrament with a special solemnity, so that for such a singular and salutary benefit they may pay the due thanksgiving to almighty God. It is known that this sacrament was instituted at the time of the Lord's supper, and because of the religious occupation concerning the office of the Lord's passion, this solemnity could not be celebrated at all. Therefore, on this day, rejoice as much as you can, faithful soul. Let the praise be full, let it be sonorous, let it be joyful, let the jubilation of the mind be beautiful, for a solemn day is being held in which the institution of such a sacrament is recalled. Sing, therefore, faithful soul, the mystery of the glorious body and of the precious blood which the King of nations poured out as the fruit of a noble womb for the price of the world.
