...evils, is so insensible, or so alien from every effect of piety, that he is not moved to weeping, is not excited to tears over this mournful fall of the human race? "Who will grant to my head water," cries the sanctified Jeremiah in the womb, "and to my eyes a fountain of tears, and I will weep day and night for the slain of my people."
A thing to be wondered at, full
of all piety. Behold, for
the reconciliation of the human
race and for the peace to be proposed
between the most omnipotent God, who was offended,
and the guilty human race, the height of the supreme counsel
established a marriage between the Son of God
and the human creature through a wonderful
dispensation. Silent, what is the kingdom of heaven
to the King who made the wedding for his Son,
which then the celestial Father, the King of the
universal creation, made for his Son when
he took him to be born in the womb of
a human virgin, says Gregory? And because
consent effects a marriage, the celestial
messenger, namely the angel Gabriel, is sent
from the Father of Lights to the virgin named
Mary, who was adorned with jewels of virtues
and sublimated with supreme gifts, and was
miraculous, whom everyone, with such pious
and such salutary supreme disposition, in the
person of the whole human nature, through
the consent of the Father, admitted to this
legation, which was worthy of veneration
from every side, as it was neither
seen to have had a predecessor, nor is it
seen to have a successor. For what was greater,
what more sublime, what finally more salutary
could be offered to the human race from heaven?
Clearly nothing. For what nature did not have,
the human mind did not know, did not understand,
heaven fears, the earth is stunned, every
creature, even the celestial one, wonders at
this whole thing. It is announced to Mary
through Gabriel and fulfilled by the Father.
For while the angel is announcing and the
Holy Spirit is coming, immediately the Word
is in the womb, immediately Mary is the
Virgin, the Word is flesh, and while remaining in the
incommunicable essence, which he is, and
while he is coeternal in the Father and the
Holy Spirit, he is assumed within the virginal
viscera, so that he, the impassible, might
suffer, and the immortal might die, and
he, the eternal before the ages, might be
temporal at the end of the ages, so that
through this ineffable sacrament, through the
holy reception and the inviolable birth,
according to the truth of each nature,
the same Virgin would be both the handmaid of
God and the Mother. Whoever you are, therefore,
who boast piously and happily in the Christian
name, weigh with just judgment the grace of
this reconciliation. For to you, once cast out,
to you, excluded from the seats of paradise,
to you, dying through long exiles, to you,
resolved into dust and ashes, while now there
is no hope of living, through the incarnation,
where power is given so that from afar
you may return to your Creator, recognize
your parent, be made free from a servant,
be brought from a stranger into a son, so that
you who were born of corruptible
