to be increased by presumption nor diminished by pusillanimity. And therefore it is a substantive noun, so that it may stand outside excessive fear and against excessively presumptuous hope. Of what gender? Common, because the nature of man suits both man and woman. Of what number? Singular, because everyone will account for themselves before the tribunal of Christus Christ. Of what figure? Simple, because it cannot be divided into many sects. For it is necessary, if one is to be saved, that one confesses only the faith of Christus Christ and is not divided from it. For those who do not have this faith should not be called men, but brutes, since they lack reason. Of what case? Nominative and vocative, because he who was created immortal is now called mortal, and he who was deputed for eternal rest is called a laborer. Of what declension? Holy, because it ought to be declined and humbled explicitly, before God and before one's own self. Whence, if it is governed well, it is governed by God; if badly, by the devil. Now let us discuss the tenth. O man, if you wish to consider what you are, you will undoubtedly find that you are a most noble animal.
