do good to them; for you should strive to swallow the rains of salutary doctrine and divine grace, and be dry from the flow of the vices of the flesh and earthly cupidity. You now have what a noun is and what you are according to substance, namely, noble according to the soul. I ask, therefore, that you conduct yourself nobly and reasonably, not vilely and carnally.

What is a pronoun? The answer: just as man is your noun, so sinner is your pronoun. When, therefore, you pour out a prayer before God, place the pronoun before the noun and say: O celestial Father, I do not invoke You as a man, but I ask that I may come as a sinner.

How many accidents does a pronoun have? Six, namely: quality, gender, number, figure, person, case.

Therefore, as a sinner, of what quality is this pronoun? Infinite, because of the infinite and uncertain multitude of offenses I commit, which I am not able to count. Of what gender? Common, because I participate in the whole gender of vices by sinning, namely, mortal and venial. Of what number? Singular, because my sins singularly torment my soul and slaughter my conscience.
