How many things befall an adverb? Three: namely, space, signification, and figure; that is, condition, likeness, and distinction. Let us clarify these three.
He who wishes to fulfill the commandments of God must also observe the condition, that is, the mode in his own action. If he wishes to give alms, he must consider when, where, to whom, how, what, and how much, and in an orderly fashion. These are the adverbs of place, quality, and order.
Signification. You see two poor men, one lying in the mud, the other begging door to door. Give alms to the first, and let the other be if you are not able to help both.
If you wish to pray, pray first what you ought to pray, and if you have made a vow, pay your canonical hours first; afterwards, read and pray. If you have not made a vow, read first the Pater Noster Our Father which God ordained to be read, and afterwards you may read what pleases you.
If you wish to fast, first [keep] the fasts ordained by the Church, and if you wish to do more, you may do so afterwards. Thus, therefore, in all things, attend to circumspection, so that you may place the adverb duly
