I recognize the animal, and many other circumstances of the animal. For the interior sense relates to the five exterior senses just as an undivided inheritance relates to children. For what is given to one of the children is given first, and then through the will of the father, it is distributed to all. The father divides what is offered to the children singly and to all as he wishes, which is evident in this: when someone sees a thing, it perhaps extends more to the touch than to have it as taste regarding color, even though he has not yet touched or tasted it. And note that when our senses are corrupted, we think the sensed things themselves are corrupted, just as when an infirm person has bitterness in his taste, he believes the tasted water is bitter, which in itself is sweet. Whence Augustine, in De spiritu et anima On Spirit and Soul, thinks that the honey of the body, which is present in the bodily senses, occurs in us in the interior sense. If the mind of a man is corrupted, he would wrongly interpret all things that occur to the senses. I recognize some things by natural instinct without any experience of the circumstances of the sensed object, just as when a judge, seeing a species, intends not only the color but also other circumstances. And thus a wolf, having seen a lamb, does not intend its color, but its taste; this intention is called estimation. It itself elicits intentions from sensible things beyond what all the senses can apprehend, as when from sight or hearing it moves someone to love or hatred. It is necessary for man to recognize these potencies and to restrain them under the yoke of reason, so that while the senses pass to whatever external things, the interior intention remains pure and cautious in its purpose, immutable. But because the movement from external senses naturally moves the internal ones, this will be clear to one viewing it subtly. And this is the cause why the holy fathers sought the solitude of the woods. Therefore, Gregory:
It is not permitted to look at what it is not permitted to desire.
And Augustine:
Through what images did I go? My eyes went such ways, and my heart.
