"For all that is in the world is the concupiscence of the flesh, and the concupiscence of the eyes, and the pride of life, which is not of God the Father, but of the world; and the world passes away, and its concupiscence. But he who does the will of God remains forever." Hence James 1: "Whoever is a friend of this world is constituted an enemy of God." O that these lovers of the world themselves, those things having been neglected, would at least attend to the severity of divine justice, which, in the final examination of the strict judgment, will judge the merits of each one and punish them most strictly. Human cunning does not deceive, nor will it be swayed by tearful supplication, and it extends to body and soul. For the strict judgment of God will suffer nothing to pass unpunished. Of which strict judgment Augustine says: "O how narrow the ways of the reprobate will be on every side. Above will be the angry Judge; below, a horrible chaos; on the right, sins accusing; on the left, infinite demons dragging to punishment; inwardly, the conscience burning; outwardly, the heat of the world. Likewise, Chrysostom: "Neither will children intercede for parents, nor will angels pray for men as they are wont to do." Let all Christ's faithful put this future examination of the strict judgment before the eyes of their mind at every time and hour, doing penance and accumulating good works, through which God may render Himself more propitious to them. For Blessed Bernard says: "If God is not with you by grace, He is present by vengeance; but woe to you if He is present to you in that way." For God is angry with him whom He does not lash while he is sinning. For he whom He does not amend by lashing in the present, He condemns eternally in the future. For the justice of God cannot judge otherwise than
