I remember the short days, and I remember the light days. What was light becomes heavy, and what is brief becomes long. When I remember the day of death, and the day of my extreme fate. These days terrify me so that there is no rest for me. When I remember that I am ash, and that the end will come quickly. I tremble without end, and like ash, I grow cold. When I remember I am about to die, what I shall become after death. The day of horror terrifies me, the day of wrath and fury. The day of mourning and sorrow, the day avenging the sinner. I am terrified indeed, much, by the countenance of the coming Judge. From whom nothing hidden will be hidden, and nothing will remain for long. And who among you will not fear when the Judge shall appear? Fire will burn before Him, which will consume the sinners. The Judge will come, a cruel king, a witness truthful and faithful. He will come and will not be silent; He will judge and will not fear; He will judge indeed, and will not accept any person. He will not be swayed by price, nor by prayers, nor will he be retracted by the fear of anyone. He will argue against the impenitent, those affluent in delights. The lovers of the flesh and the world, and all sinners at once, and then all the delicate ones will speak ill of pleasure; and those who spend their time in vanity will vanish, condemned. What then will the sinner do, and what will the lover of the body do? And what will he be able to do, to whom nothing will now be permitted? O how grave, how harsh it will be on the left, "Go away," while from the right He will say, "Come, you who possess life," He, the King, the giver of life. Then all hope will perish, and "tomorrow, tomorrow" will depart for his torment, whoever goes there. Now he will no longer emerge, there the flame will burn, and he will be gnawed by worms. He will be anguished by anxieties, he who does not merit to be saved. O what impious torturers will then torture the sinners, and terrible avengers will judge the transgressors. When I remember diligently that after death, so frequently, the just will stand, what I have prudently considered, I am now vehemently delighted. For the days approach, in which there will be rest for the just, in which the persecutors will cease, and the patient will reign.
