ALTHOUGH it is known to us, and we have long since had worn-out ears from the curses with which we are accused by our adversaries, and which are uttered everywhere by them so that they may sprinkle us with disgrace: nevertheless, because we are warned from the opposite side to progress by doing good through insults and calumnies, because it seemed right to God to exercise our patience: if it were a matter merely of our name and reputation, we would more willingly remain silent, enduring any bitterness, than initiate any defense: especially since it is our lot to be agitated by the malice and ingratitude of men, so that we may lift our eyes upward, where a certain reward is laid up for us.
