For they are unworthy of your effort to soothe them, or of your consideration, since they not only take pleasure in the idolatries with which they are infected, and wish to remain in them with obstinate malice, but also snatch at the accusations of our adversaries with greedy ears, so that some pretext for their own impiety may be available.
There are, however, two kinds of men who, led by the authority of others, are either hostile to us or consider us suspect, or recoil from us, whom we hope and desire to appease, provided that we are treated kindly and attentively.
