Substance. I. Substance is that which stands by itself, and is as it were the foundation of accidents, which lean upon and adhere to it. Or, to speak more crudely, Substance is that which subsists by itself and does not need any external support: as God, angels, spirits: heaven, earth, water, fire: man, stone, tree: and other infinite things of this kind, which all belong by nature to this Predicament of Substance as to their own proper order. Dialecticians establish such a series of words for this Predicament.
