Consider the end of every action before the beginning.
By day and by night, look to the final hour.
Do not associate with him whom you see being blamed by good men.
Strive to give damage to no one by those things which you do, or say, or think.
Do not rejoice in the florid things of life; for the grassy flower, when you have touched it, fades.
In sorrowful things, give thanks, and the yoke of afflictions will be light.
In temptations, be strong; for they have argued against many even of the greater ones.
Do not accuse the long-suffering of God; for it is a common medicine.
Prosecute the inequality of life with hatred, but for that reason, do not accuse God.
Let us attend to ourselves, and we shall not represent others; for there are many things in us for which we criticize others.
nas.
Let the psalm of prayer be in your mouth; for God, being named, puts demons to flight.
Let prayer be done with sobriety, lest we ask of God things which are not pleasing to him.
Always remember God, and let your thought be heaven.
Curb the eye; for when you do not attend, it is circulated.
Use the tongue sparingly; for it often brings forth things which it would have been better to hide.
Cultivate the mind by meditation on the law; for it extirpates evil thoughts when it is continuously frequented.
Hide your virtues; but strive to acquire many witnesses of your life.
Prosecute the pleasures of the flesh with hatred; for they make the soul, with the body, base/sordid.
Spend on the body only as much as it needs, not as much as it desires.
Do not choose to live delicately; for it conciliates love of this life; but enmity towards God is born from either.
Avert joy in life; for it is slippery, and precipitates those who are exulting.
If you have riches, distribute them; but if you do not have them, do not collect them.
Consider fasting as armor, prayer as a wall, and tears as a bath.
Whatever you have done wickedly, remember all with groans; for from this arises the continuous compunction of the soul.
Foster the poor; for they reconcile the judge to us.
Subvene the needs of the saints; for through them, sociability with God happens to you.
Frequent the church no differently than heaven; and do not say or think anything earthly in it.
Consider it necessary to be content with one's own affairs; but permit to God the care of that matter.
Debilitate your flesh with good labors, but consider that it cannot be completely tamed.
