Rejoice in the conversation of the holy: for through them, God is manifested to you.
Distinguish the truly holy by their works. For every tree is known by its fruit.
Always strive to gain something from the contemplation of the holy. Observe their appearance and conduct: for both are very useful.
Exercise purity in the heart and chastity in the body. For these two make you a temple of God.
Guard the temple in this way: as one belonging to God, who built it, and who intends to judge, and who requires your image—which is His image—to be kept to a pure rule.
Conversations of worldly people separate the mind from God: therefore, neither speak to them, and avoid those who do.
When you are assailed by reproaches, consider whether anything has been done by you worthy of reproach. If nothing has been committed by you, consider the reproach as fleeting smoke.
In all matters in which you are wronged, flee to patience: and the harm will be rolled back upon the wrongdoers.
When you see riches, or glory, or worldly power, consider their instability, and you will escape the bait.
Endure tribulations: for among them virtues are born and sprout, just as roses among thorns.
Do not consider anything to be equal in dignity to virtue: for it is an image of God. And therefore, just as He is, it is immutable.
Lament the prosperous sinner: for the sword of justice looms over him.
Consider laziness to be the mother of vices. For it plunders the good things you already hold: and as for those you do not yet possess, it does not allow you to acquire them.
When someone does wicked things, and yet is not affected by any shame because of them, they exasperate the wound more, and their error tends toward despair.
As often as you are sad, reflect on how many good things are prepared for the faithful: and the fruit of the Spirit will easily be with you.
It is fitting for the faithful to conduct themselves humbly toward all: for to be humbled only before some proves a certain feigned humility.
Prefer nothing to the love of a neighbor, except for those things for which charity does not correctly look toward God.
Do not adhere to anyone against the law of God, nor be a helper. For it makes God unworthy if one prefers another to Him.
Do not provide patronage to the wicked: for you provoke them to evil, and you yourself are contaminated by the communion of sin.
Admonish the sinner, but do not accuse the one who errs: for one is proper to a slanderer, the other to one who corrects.
