Always hear and speak the sayings of the holy: for they stir the soul toward a zeal for good.
Each of us has the mind as a church in our house, and we ought to perform the rituals of the church within it.
If gatherings are held in the church, go forth: if they are not held, depart having sung the apostolic gospel yourself.
Behold the glory of the virtues from the holy: for they are immortal, and exist even after death.
You will hate wickedness when you consider that it is a sword of demons against our sides.
If you admonish the one who has stumbled, temper your words with sympathy: and as the ears are softened, the heart is enlightened.
a Literally, "what is of the holy": or, "what the holy are wont to do."
When you speak among the holy, speak of the things of the Spirit: but when you do not speak to such people, speak nothing of these things.
Always press on with good actions, lest by leaving them behind, you depart half-finished.
Run in such a way that you may seize the prize, that is, ceaselessly. For it is necessary to run the race of virtue until we exit the stadium of life.
Never become a sluggard in the working of the commandments: for to such people, labor is in vain, and it adds labor upon labor.
Exercise patience even before it is necessary, so that you may find its armor ready, even in necessity.
b This is the imperative of the verb "to owe" or "to seek," "to ask."
Fight against evil thoughts, and say to them what is spoken in the law: with much diligence withdraw your eyes from this life: for a pernicious smoke comes from it, rendering the soul turbid.
If you have been mixed up in some evil habit, cut it off little by little: and with much labor you will move, and through the soul you will cast out the thorn.
c Instead of "these" (masculine article). For pronominal articles are often used for demonstratives.
Love God, who is pure, purely: and consider everything else to be secondary to Him.
If you wish to be a temple of God, offer to Him the continuous sacrifice of constant prayer.
Do not take as a consultant one who lives negligently: for one who rejoices in evils can neither hate good things nor give good counsel.
Abstain from every corruption, and partake of the mystical supper every day: for thus our body begins to become that of Christ.
Do not grumble at the things by which you are disciplined by God: for He disciplines as a father, and is worthy of being honored as a benefactor.
When you are dishonored, rejoice: if it is done unjustly, the reward is great: if justly, and you are prudent, you are already freed from the scourge.
