Compare the painful and base things of life to a shadow and a wheel, for as a shadow it vanishes, and as a wheel it rolls.
Always strive to progress and to call upon God, for by adding a little to a little, one collects more good little by little, in every way.
* For βέλη darts, as above, according to Attic custom.
If you wish to escape the painful through punishment, do not ever revile, for from that time the divine will be provoked.
If you wish to drive every scourge from your house, do not speak evil of a fellow human being: for the One who made him is rightfully provoked.
If you wish to be free from all sin, do not intently study the actions of others: for there are many in you, regarding which you suspect another.
Flee pride, O man, even if you are rich, lest you have God opposed to you.
Love humility, even if you are great, so that you may be exalted in the day of judgment.
Do not mock a person, lest you have a blemish in your whole life.
When you are in church, do not be distracted: for those standing before a king neither laugh nor are distracted.
Do not despise your life, and act indifferently beyond the law, so that you do not incur destruction by acting against the law.
With all safety, remember these things that have been said, so that they may show you forth in a brilliant life.
Zealously pursue a solemn life, so that you may have the boldness to turn back those who are sinning.
Secure yourself against arrogance, do not rebuke anyone, so that you are not condemned for being puffed up.
Do not laugh at another’s misfortune, so that you are not laughed at by those you do not wish.
Guard these precautions, so that they may procure for you a crown of glory.
Be temperate in your deeds, so that they may render you manifest to men and pleasing to God: for the divine is very sweet, and God is served by such accomplishments.
Always strive to progress in good works: for the flight from life toward virtue is good and short.
It is necessary for one desiring incorruptible things to consider corruptible things as nothing.
If you truly desire life, always await human death, and hate the present life: for you see the wheel rolling ceaselessly.
Do not desire goods whose use passes away, and whose possession perishes.
