ON THE TABLE OF THE CHURCH
of God, described under the image of the Halcyon
in a poem by Martin
Socolovius.
Why the Church, giving birth in the middle of the waves,
Is like the Halcyons, this table teaches.
But it is also depicted with other figures,
God has impressed many signs upon nature.
The nest of the Hypolaidos a type of bird, likely the Icterine Warbler lies on the ground among the rocks, into which
The lazy Cuckoo puts eggs to be fostered.
And when it has long dutifully fed the voracious cuckoo,
And yet cannot now satisfy its gluttony.
Then, untying the evil rewards of a life saved for itself,
The cuckoo devours its own nurse with its mouth.
Thus the Church, showing itself as a pious mother to the Thammero likely a corruption or specific regional reference for a deceiver/enemy,
Nurtures a serpent in its own bosom.
It does not fear to turn cruel bites against the mother,
Nor does he think there is a God, who sees these things.
Son of God, defender of Your own honor, forbid
The cuckoos from satisfying themselves upon Your entrails.
