3. There has never been a cruder fable or a more harmful deception upon the Church of God than those which the Papists invented regarding the Franciscan stigmata, in order to steal glory from Christ. In order to adorn and recommend this more highly in a certain little book which is circulated throughout Italy in the Italian language, entitled: Flosculi Sancti Francisci Little Flowers of Saint Francis, these blasphemous men have not hesitated to affirm that Francis was another Christ who, by the stigmata impressed upon him by an angel in a certain wilderness—with no witnesses present (for no one has ever seen them, and such is the blindness and fury of the Papists that they worship them with divine honors)—was able to save from eternal death all men who lived from the time of Francis until the end of the world. For they say that Christ saved only those who had lived up until the Franciscan times.
